Donnerstags-Vortrag #72 What is it that we conserve?

jeudi, 05. décembre 2024 - 17:00 until 18:30

The conservation of cultural heritage is a well-established practice in many societies, with professionals generally understanding its purpose and potential outcomes. However, the underlying assumptions of conservation are less clear upon closer examination. Traditionally focused on preserving objects, it is not evident that the ultimate goal is merely their preservation. While conservators engage with stakeholders about the future use of conserved items, there is less clarity regarding the role of human concerns in conservation decision-making. Given rapid global cultural and technological changes, it is more pertinent than ever to reflect on what we are truly aiming to preserve.
